Merlot Memories

Inspired by the Cheviot Cloth Dress featured in Harper’s Bazaar in May 1879, Merlot Memories brings Victorian fashion into the imagined world of Jules Verne-era steampunk. The fitted jacket, high collar, layered overskirt, and pleated underskirt echo the elegance and structure of late nineteenth-century dress, while the rich merlot color gives the piece warmth and drama.

The jacket and overskirt are crafted from soft micro suede, with black satin gimp trim defining the seams, edges, and layered details. The underskirt combines pleated brocade and micro suede, adding contrast, texture, and a hint of sheen beneath the sculpted overskirt.

Quilting is worked directly into the garment, adding subtle texture and dimension while becoming part of the overall design. The stitching blends with the trim, buttons, and layered construction, showing how quilting can enhance both the surface and shape of a garment.

Chains sweep across the jacket and overskirt, adding a steampunk sense of invention, travel, and adventure. Tiny buttons and decorative accents complete the look, suggesting a garment made for an explorer, inventor, or heroine from an unwritten Victorian story.

Merlot Memories combines historical inspiration, textile craftsmanship, and fantasy costuming into a striking example of quilting as wearable art.
