Inspired by Victorian fashion and the adventurous spirit of Jules Verne-era steampunk, Chardonnay Lace combines rich satin, dramatic shaping, and detailed quilting in a garment full of movement and character. The jacket is based on Butterick pattern B6400 and features a fitted silhouette, high collar, black cording, and button details that echo the structure and refinement of nineteenth-century dress.

Freehand quilted feathers are stitched across the front and back of the jacket, adding texture and dimension directly into the garment. Rather than standing apart as decoration, the quilting becomes part of the design, enhancing the sheen of the satin and drawing attention to the shaped bodice.

The overskirt and underskirt were drafted from a pattern found in an 1870s edition of Harper’s Bazaar. The satin overskirt is gathered and lifted for a full, sculptural effect, with delicate button accents adding period detail. Beneath it, the soft micro suede underskirt is designed to be worn over a bustle, creating the dramatic silhouette associated with Victorian fashion.

With its deep red satin, black trim, brass-toned accents, and structured accessories, Chardonnay Lace suggests a confident traveler, inventor, or adventurer from an imagined Victorian world. The piece brings together historical inspiration, quilting, and fantasy costuming in a striking example of wearable art.
