Back on the Road to Houston: Quilts, Friends, and Life driving the Beast

Houston Quilt Festival 2025

There’s something special about Quilt Festival week in Houston. The excitement, the creativity, and yes, the long days that somehow still fly by. This year, I was back at it again, working the Quilter’s Rule booth and driving the trusty truck and trailer (affectionately known as the Beast) all the way to Texas. There’s nothing quite like rolling into the George R. Brown Convention Center, watching the doors open, and seeing that sea of color and fabric come to life.

Between helping quilters find their perfect rulers, and templates, catching up with old friends, and sneaking away to admire the stunning quilts on display, it was another unforgettable week of laughter, inspiration, and a little bit of organized chaos; the best kind! From the gorgeous quilts to the show floor energy, Houston once again reminded me how lucky I am to be part of this amazing quilting community.

Behind the Scenes at the Quilter’s Rule Booth

Most folks see the sparkle of Quilt Festival once the doors open. Rows of beautiful quilts, excited shoppers, and perfectly polished booths. What they don’t see is the whirlwind that happens before the first fat quarter ever hits the table. That’s where Patricia and I come in, loaded up and rolling out from Wisconsin/Missouri, tea in hand and GPS set for Houston.

The drive is long, really long, but we’ve had lots of practice. There’s plenty of time to swap stories, plan the booth layout, and laugh about how we must be getting a little too old for all this heavy lifting. (Let’s just say unloading crates and rolling carpet feels a lot more like a full-body workout than it used to!) By the time we pull into the George R. Brown Convention Center, the truck is dusty, the snacks are gone, and we’re ready to transform our little corner into Quilter’s Rule central.

Load-in day is organized chaos: forklifts buzzing, aisles packed with boxes, and everyone trying to find their extension cords at once. But there’s an energy to it that I love. It’s like a big family reunion with fabric dust instead of confetti. Once everything’s set up and the products shining under the lights, the exhaustion gives way to excitement. Seeing familiar faces stop by the booth, meeting new quilters, and helping folks find the perfect tool for their next project makes every mile, every crate, and every sore muscle absolutely worth it.

My Favorite Quilts from Houston

Once the booth was up and running, and Patricia and I finally had a chance to catch our breath, I did what every quilter secretly waits for; wandered the show floor. There’s just nothing like it. Everywhere you turn, you’re surrounded by color, texture, and creativity that makes you stop mid-step and just stare.

Some quilts amazed me with their precision every point perfect, every stitch exactly where it should be. Others caught my eye with the stories they told. I’ve always loved that about Quilt Festival. You can walk a few aisles and see everything from classic handwork to bold, modern designs that make you rethink what’s possible with fabric.

This year, I was especially drawn to pieces that blended artistry with technical skill. The kind of quilts that make you both inspired and a little jealous. My Absolute favorite was “Peacock” by Naomi Ootomo. The hand work on this quilt was amazing. I am always impressed by anyone who has this much patience. Check out a few of my other favorites below.

Catching Up with Quilting Friends

One of the very best parts of Houston isn’t just the quilts, it’s the people. Quilt Festival always feels like coming home. Everywhere I turned, there was a familiar face: teachers, vendors, longarmers, and quilters I’ve met in classes or at the booth. There’s an instant connection when you share a love of fabric and creativity.

It was wonderful catching up with friends from the industry, swapping stories about travel and classes, and laughing about how we used to bounce back from setup day a lot faster than we do now. Still, the joy of being together makes every sore muscle worth it.

And then there are the quilters who come to shop, learn, and be inspired. I love hearing about their projects and seeing that spark when they find the perfect tool or idea. Those moments remind me why this community is so special: kind, creative, and endlessly supportive. By the end of the week my feet were tired, but my heart was full.

Looking Back (and Looking Ahead)

By the time the lights dimmed and it was time to pack it all back up, Patricia and I were equal parts exhausted and grateful. There’s something about the end of Quilt Festival that always leaves me smiling: tired feet, full heart, and a camera roll bursting with inspiration.

Working the Quilter’s Rule booth, catching up with friends, and soaking in all that creative energy reminds me exactly why I do this year after year. Even when the miles feel a little longer and the load-out feels a little heavier, it’s worth every bit of effort to be surrounded by people who get it. Who love fabric, laughter, and late-night stitching sessions just as much as I do.

So here’s to another amazing Houston Quilt Festival in the books! If you were there, I’d love to hear what quilts stopped you in your tracks, or if you spotted me and Patricia wrangling rulers in the booth, come say hi in the comments below. Until next time, keep stitching, keep smiling, and maybe start stretching now…because load-in day will be here before we know it!
