Cabernet Romance
Inspired by the romance of Victorian dress and the adventurous spirit of Jules Verne-era steampunk, Cabernet Romance combines period styling with the unexpected use of quilting in garment design. The rich red micro suede gives the piece a soft, luxurious feel, while the fitted bodice, layered skirt, and bustier silhouette suggest the drama and elegance of the nineteenth century.
Freehand quilted feathers and fillers are stitched directly into the garment, adding texture, movement, and subtle ornamentation without overpowering the design. Silk batting provides a graceful drape, allowing the quilted areas to hold their shape while still moving beautifully. The acetate lining gives the garment a smooth, comfortable finish.
The silk brocade bustier is lightly boned for structure and closes with a zipper at the back, creating a refined foundation beneath the jacket-style bodice. Decorative chains, buttons, trim, and dark contrast details add a steampunk touch, hinting at clockwork invention, travel, and Victorian fantasy.
Based on Simplicity pattern 2172, this piece transforms traditional quilting techniques into wearable art. Cabernet Romance invites the viewer to see quilting not just as something made for the bed or wall, but as an essential part of fashion, costume, and storytelling.
